How Do I Build Trust in a Virtual Meeting?
See how to create a virtual meeting that has as much impact as an in-person one.
Do you feel like in your virtual meetings, you can't build the same level of trust, have that connection like you do in those face-to-face meetings?
I mean, can we actually implement effective empathy-based listening in our virtual meetings? The answer is absolutely yes. Matter of fact, you can be just as impactful. What's the problem? In our virtual meetings, as we're doing those zooms on the computer, we are actually bringing in more distractions and that's what's causing that disconnect. What do I mean?
We think because that camera, and we're so far away from our client, our prospect, that they can't see if we have our computer screen up. They don't realize, yeah, we have the TV on, but it's on mute. My goodness. It's just covering the market. What? They don't know that we've got our family. They're quiet in the background. And my little puppy, so cute.
And they're being quiet. No, they actually can feel that. They're watching us. As a matter of fact, in these virtual meetings, they're only one or two feet away from us. But our biggest virtual distraction, it's the fact that we realize once this meeting is over, I just pop on and hit the next Zoom link and I jump right into my next meeting.
They know every single time when the clock's running, we're coming to the top of the hour and we're staring around and we're coming up with excuses. And then they see when we start to wrap things up, you know what we basically are telling them? I got on your stage, but I got to go. It's not that important. And there's somebody else's stage that's more important than yours.
And it really kills us with trust. And that's why we think, oh my goodness, we can't have good connection in virtual meetings. You can connect just as well, if not better in virtual meetings. But we are the ones that have to remove the distractions that we put into these situations.
