Category 2 Distractions: Personal Non-Biased

Explore how personal non-biased can get in the way of listening.

Category two listening distractions, personal, non-biased distractions. Yeah, they're non-biased. It doesn't have anything to do with the person we're listening to. These are personal things going on in our lives that we may place as priority over the individual we're listening to. If you have a family member in the hospital, how are you not worried about your loved one? If you have a child who struggles in school. Even professionally, if you're meeting somebody, but after the meeting, you've got a big client presentation, how do we address these category twos? It comes down to this. We can't not worry. We can't remove our concerns outside of this meeting, but I'm going to give you a tip.

If something's really bothering you, something you're really worried, before you go into that meeting, make a phone call. Just check on them because I need you to understand, at that moment that you walk into your meeting where we want to be great listeners, at that point, there's nothing you can do. And if something's going on that's so serious that you're not going to be able to listen and build trust, you might even cancel the meeting. Because what's more important, getting that information, doing business together or always demonstrating we're trying to get on their stage? This is not an easy category to deal with. And life changes, but if we're going to partner, they need to know when we are together, my focus, my attention is to get on your stage.
