Is Note Taking a Distraction?
Explore the right way to take notes during a meeting.
Should we take notes during our meetings? Is it a distraction? Statistics say when we take notes during meetings, we absorb 15% percent more information than if we don't take notes. So note taking is great. First thing, we cannot take notes on a computer - you got to put the laptop down. If we're going to take notes, we need to put those notes in front.
So the person that we're communicating with, they can see it. Why? This is not about us absorbing the information. This is about us demonstrating that we're seeking to understand you. So when we are taking notes, we want to make sure every once in a while we use a word that gives them an idea of what we're taking notes on - when they say this is a tricky situation, “Tricky. What do you mean by tricky?”
Right. So they can see it, because we really want to make sure our notes aren't distracting them. Now, what do we take notes on? Not information that fulfills our goals, our agendas, our objectives. We need to take information about details of what it means to be them. Yes, take notes. We've got to make sure we're taking the right notes.
