MFS Meridian – Meridian Prudent Capital Fund W1 GBP received the German Fund Award 2023

A total of 36 funds from 31 investment firms were recognised for their ‘Outstanding’ investment performance in twelve categories. The renowned Munich-based Institut für Vermögensaufbau (IVA) was once again commissioned to select the three best funds in each category, evaluating active management performance on the basis of a specially developed portfolio and risk analysis framework.

Only funds that generated a positive result over a five-year assessment period were nominated for the award (period ending: 31 October 2022).

For the comparison, all potential winning candidates are first ranked according to their risk and return data. The investment guidelines of the best funds based on these criteria are then assessed by the Institut für Vermögensaufbau (IVA). The IVA examines whether the funds actually added value through manager performance and their investment strategy, or whether they merely outperformed due to a broader investment universe. In this way, investment funds that failed to achieve a discernible alpha are ranked lower – even if their return data is better than that of other funds in the same group. In order to measure actual management performance, the fund evaluation uses a benchmark tailored specifically to the fund. The benchmark is compiled individually and purely quantitatively for each investment fund analysed and generally prices in systematic risk premia. This ensures that the fund's outperformance compared to its synthetic best-fit benchmark is distilled as far as possible down to reflect actual management performance. Since each fund is unique when viewed closely, the three most successful funds in a category are awarded the rating 'Outstanding'.

But, of course, accurately modelling historical returns using a suitable index portfolio is not always possible. In such cases, the funds are therefore valued on the basis of their absolute performance. This applies in part to the category 'Mixed Fund Global Multi-Asset'.
