We started in 1924 by creating the first mutual fund, which made investing safer and accessible for all.
When the Great Depression ran deep and trust was scarce, MFS created one of the industry’s first in-house research departments to better understand what we would own before investing.
When government regulation threatened the mutual fund, we lobbied lawmakers and even the U.S. President to protect the future of the industry. Not long after, we played a lead role in drafting the Investment Company Act of 1940 – still the guidepost for investment management companies today.
Always active and future-focused, we pioneered active fixed income to offer investors diversification to better meet their needs.
As markets globalized, so did we, opening regional offices to serve clients worldwide and provide greater access to investment opportunities.

Just after the dotcom bubble, we integrated our investment teams across continents and asset classes – a game changing move in risk management that helped us avoid the worst of the 2007 global financial crisis and continues to help us protect investor assets today.
